Still Bloated Even Though You Eat Healthy? 6 Reasons Worth Exploring

By Kathryn Potenzone-Chiariello, DNP, A-GNP-C · 6 min read

Many women come to us frustrated: they've cut out processed food, added more vegetables, maybe even tried an elimination diet — and they're still bloated by mid-afternoon. A healthy diet matters, but persistent bloating usually has more than one contributing factor.

Common contributors we look at

  • How quickly food moves through the digestive tract (motility)
  • Changes in the balance of gut microbes, including possible bacterial overgrowth
  • Digestive enzyme and stomach acid function
  • Stress, sleep and the gut–brain connection
  • Hormonal shifts across the cycle, perimenopause and menopause
  • High-fiber or high-FODMAP 'healthy' foods that a sensitive gut may not tolerate well yet

Why a root-cause approach helps

Rather than guessing, a structured evaluation combines your history, a physical-exam-informed review, conventional labs and — when clinically appropriate — functional testing. Testing is used to inform a plan, not to diagnose conditions it isn't validated for.

When to see a clinician

Seek prompt medical care for red-flag symptoms such as unintended weight loss, blood in the stool, persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or severe pain. These need conventional evaluation first.
